The past four years

I remember it like it was not so far gone. I carried the last of my belongings into my first floor room in Bouge, my body sweating from the lingering summer heat. I rushed my mom, brother, and friend Sarah back on the road, ready to start my new venture. I wandered around this unfamiliar campus in my pastel flowered dress, stopping any time I saw a new face—a student just like me—confused and excited for this new step in life.
I met many friends whose names are long forgotten and faces faded in memory. It was the outgoing freshmen days when it was necessary to meet every single new person and tell them every detail about your life as if they were going to be your best friend. And after four years, it may only be a smile or wave you give them in acknowledgement when you see them, if they are even still here at all.

Overcoming hatred with compassion and education

In October there were several "hate crimes" on our campus. Racial and homophobic slurs were painted on peoples door, and one of our faculty was attacked up at the Killington campus by an unknown assailant or screamed gay slurs during the attack.

Social injustices are happening every day in all communities all around the world. Some injustices may seem relatively graver than others, but all are similar in that the victims are treated unfairly and are deeply disrespected. The recent hate crimes on our own campus where racial and homophobic slurs were painted across residence hall walls was an ugly wake-up call for me. Even the most intimate communities like Green Mountain College have their dark sides.

Writing instruction from Alan

I would advise you not to let this go until the last minute. It’s not a BS assignment by any means. You did a credible job on your mid-term reflection essay, and I expect an even better job on this last paper. You must get me to take what you say very seriously. That starts with taking yourself seriously. “Credibility” begins at home, but it must also reveal itself in the written word.

Studying Tips

1. quit fb asap. run away from it! turn off email too - life can wait while you write this paper.

2. get a spray bottle. the moment you want to sleep, spray it on your face. best if it’s face mist (has moisturizing effect), but water is okay too. no caffeinated water in the bottle - if any, this kind of liquid should be taken orally for maximum effectiveness.
